Singer Akon has now finalized an agreement with the Senegal government regarding his cryptocurrency run city, the Akon City. The announcement was made public by the singer himself on Twitter earlier this week.
The singer first announced the plans for building a cryptocurrency run city at the Cannes Lions advertising festival in 2018. The city would be built on a 2,000-acre piece of land near Dakar, the capital city. The land was gifted to the singer by Macky Sall, the president of Senegal.
As per a statement released in 2018, Akon Crypto City will be the first of its kind, located within just minutes ride from the airport. The city would make use of Akon’s own cryptocurrency, Akoin.
Apart from being the world’s first cryptocurrency run city, Akon City will be the first city in the world to function on renewable energy. The city would be close to a real-life version of the fictional state Wakanda from the Black Panther movie series by Marvel. The singer plans on finishing the project in Senegal in the next 10 years.
Akoin: Africa’s Future?
Akon’s cryptocurrency, Akoin, is expected to be released and set out for exchanges in the first quarter of 2020. Akoin is projected as a one of its kind ecosystem bringing together best of both digital and manual tools and services together to cater to the needs of budding African entrepreneurs and the general public.
Cryptocurrency and Africa
The singer with Akon City hopes to set a global example for a crypto run city. With Akoin as the economic center, he hopes to expand the project to other countries in Africa, aiming to digitally connect all the major cities. The aim of digitally unifying Africa’s major cities would take about 50 to 100 years.
